Writing Genres

Writing Genres are a way to group something similar. It’s basically a category to classify certain writing types. There are many ways to classify genres. The most popular ones are; romance, fantasy, science fiction, mystery and horror.

The first writing type is romance. The main theme is usually about love and passion between two people. A popular plot is a bored young woman goes on some sort of adventure and finds herself a handsome rich, or athletic guy. After the woman overcomes a few obstacles, she finds true love. A popular publisher that is known for romance is Harlequin. They have many books in different writing genres.

Fantasy is a great genre because it allows the writer to be truly creative. Fantasy stories usually have a mystic theme and center around fictional worlds where dwarves, elves, trolls and other unique creatures live. Fantasy almost always has a great battle of some sort between the races. You only have to look at J.R.R. Tolkien The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books to see the type of writing. Fantasy allows you to create a different language, race, and life from what is your current reality.

Science fiction is another popular category. It’s similar to fantasy in that it allows you to be extremely creative. You can create your own galaxy, races, planets, ships, technology, the list is endless of how creative you can be. A great example of this is the Star Trek: series.

Mystery is another great writing genre because it’s full of foreshadowing. It’s the one genre where the writer drops little hints about what’s to come. A typical mystery is usually about a murder and involves cops. Mystery novels are engaging and get the reader thinking. They are harder to write as the author has to walk a fine line about being too obvious about the outcome of the plot. A famous mystery writer is Agatha Christie.

Horror is the last genre I’m going to mention. It’s also easy to write. Horror allows you to be creative, and you can bring out your dark side. Vampires, werewolves, murderers, thieves, zombies, cannibals, evil scientists, aliens, are just a sample of the different types of creatures you can base your story around. A famous author known for horror is Stephen King.

Now that you know the different writing genres, feel free to try each style out to see which one you enjoy. It’s also possible to mix-genres too, so don’t feel restricted.
