All About Writing Fiction

Writing fiction is an amazing experience.
The ability to create a story out of your mind is a one of a kind experience, there is nothing like it out there.
Many great authors write fiction, you only have to look at; Stephen King, Dean Kootnz, John Saul, Charles Dickinson, J.R.R. Tolkien, Anne Rice, to name a few.
We’ve all been touched by fiction. Think about all the great worlds that now have a following, worlds like; Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and so on.
Writing fiction doesn’t have to be difficult. There are a few different ways to go about it. Some things you should think about are:
1. What type of story do you want?
2. Do you require planning up front?
3. Do you require a schedule to motivate you?
Below I’ve outlined the things I think about before I start writing fiction. Personally, I like to just write and see where the story takes me. But I do have a vague idea in mind of where I want to take it.
Some of the planning I do ahead of time is:
- I’ve decided what point of view I want to write – third person usually.
- I’ve decided who my main characters are, or at least one of them.
- What I hope to reveal in the story (at least one main point in the plot)
- Where it will be based (location-wise, time-frame)
- What type of fiction (horror, romance, love, mystery, fantasy, scifi)
- The length of the story, whether it’s a short story or I’m writing a novel. (For more help check out tips for writing a novel.)
- By this time I have already decided how I will start my story (always make sure you start with a cliff-hanger, something to reel the people in and keep them wanting more).
I think anyone can write fiction, all you need is an imagination and the motivation to keep going to see where the story takes you.
