Writing Activities

Writing activities are a great way to open your mind and get ideas and inspiration that you wouldn't normally have.

Below are some activities to start with:

1. Crossword puzzles have been reported as helping your brain. Doctors encourage older people to perform them daily to help fight against alzheimers, dementia, attention deficit disorder, and recover from strokes.

Tear them up and put them in a hat or container. When you are ready, pick one and start writing from there. To view a list of story starters, click here.

3. Brainstorm! I used to love this in school. The teacher would give us one word, like "rain" and we would need to write as much as we could about that word. You can use this for any word, but what you get out on paper could surprise you. This is just one of many exercises that I practice. To view more creative writing exercises, click here.

4. Some other creative writing activities are: change your point of view, write from the past, write a descriptive setting, write an action scene. For more tips, check out this great article

on writing activities.

5. Creative writing worksheets are becoming more and more popular. They are a great way to get your thoughts all worked out before you even start writing. Since I enjoy writing on the fly, I’ve never used this method. But not everyone is like me; so stay tuned for more information.

6. Creative writing for kids is a great way to encourage them to use their imagination. I have fond memories of writing stories in English. I think every kid should be encouraged to write, draw and publish their own book. In grade four we were given this opportunity, and from that day on, I have loved writing.

7. Creative journal writing is another great activity. Most schools start this early, it’s a great way to get someone to start writing. There is no pressure, you write about your day. It’s so easy anyone could do it. Just write about your thoughts, the events, or how you feel. Before you know it, you’ll be looking forward to that time, and you’ll be improving your writing skills.

These are the writing exercises I personally do. Remember it's important to always be writing. Good luck!
