Story Starters

Story starters are a popular creative writing tool.

They are similar to writing prompts except they give you encouragement to launch a story.

Usually starters are a sentence or two, enough to get you what you need to get you writing.

I have created a list of 100 different starts. I have broken them out onto four separate web-pages. Feel free to use whatever starter you want and come back anytime you need inspiration.

Story Starters 1-25:

1. The wind howled through the window. The girl sat huddling her knees waiting for the storm to be over.

2. Damn it! He should have known better. Now the cops were going to know where to find him.

3. Running down the street, the man held back a sob. He wasn’t prone to crying, but today was an exception.

4. Jack had seen enough. Shutting his eyes he tried to block out the fire that was destroying the city.

5. Thunder clapped against the sky. The girl shuddered. She knew something was out there in the night. Something that shouldn't be.

6. The detective kicked his shoe against the desk. He was tired of being one step behind the killer. Enough was enough.

7. Betty dried her hands on the dish towel. Her kitchen was sparkling clean, just how her husband liked it. Now she was ready for him to come home.

8. The old man walked to his desk and pulled out a key. He handed it with a scowl to his nephew. “You don’t know what you’re doing,” he muttered.

9. Her belly stuck out to the world. She felt so fat and bloated. Would this baby ever come out? She had been due four days ago, and still no baby.

10. George, a strapping athletic kid, ran around the track. His feet soared with little effort. This year he would be champion.

11. It was midnight. The woman closed the curtains and huddled on her bed. Tim should have been home hours ago, why hadn’t he called?

12. A bird whistled. Didi followed the sound. She was stuck in the woods and her only hope was a bird. She would have laughed at herself if she wasn’t so worried about being lost.

13. The hissing grew louder. The man was scrunched up against the wall as tight as he could possibly be. He wished he was invisible. He did not want the boa to find him.

14. Cursing, the pirate threw the goblet at his first mate. “You should have known,” he hollered. “I’ll teach you for this!”

15. She couldn’t believe in two days she’d be married. It had felt like she’d been waiting her whole life.

16. Her heart was pounding. Why had he yelled at her? Who did he think he was?

17. “You’re fired.”
Tom looked sheepishly at the floor. How was he ever going to explain this to his wife.

18. Clenching his hands, he formed a fist. He was going to teach this fool a lesson. He’d had enough of listening to the drunk shoot his mouth off.

19. She had drained his bank accounts. He couldn’t believe he had fallen for that scam. How was he supposed to pay his bills? How could he tell anyone about this?

20. Mary Ruth had been alive for one hundred and two years. She knew things she shouldn’t know. She also knew how to keep her mouth shut.

21. “Stop it you’re killing him,” she cried helplessly. The man stopped punching her husband John, and looked up at her. “Shut up cause you’re next,” he growled.

22. This was the first field trip of the school year. Todd was excited. He was only seven, so he lived for these field trips. It was on these trips that he got to taste the real world, the world without his parents.

23. The barking stopped.
Maggie slipped out of bed and quietly approached the window which faced the backyard. The neighbours still had their light on, but she couldn’t see anything. The dog that lived next door, never stopped barking. So why the sudden quietness? It seemed almost eerie.

24. He had been rich all his life. He didn’t know any other way. Staring down at his dirty hands, he wondered how his life had gone to hell.

25. A gun went off, disturbing the quietness of the night. Jim stood up on his porch and peered into the night. There was no moon, he couldn’t see a thing. He wondered who was doing the shooting.
