Stephen Coonts - The Red Horseman
If you've never heard of Stephen Coonts, than you are in for a treat. This book is well written and a great read.
I love finding these hidden gem books, that are well written by authors that you aren't always familiar with.
Stephen Coonts is a former carrier pilot, so he has a first hand account of what it's like flying planes and dealing with the enemy. He is also the author of the book, Under Siege.
Admiral Jake Grafton is back in The Red Horseman. Along with Toad Tarkington, Jack Yocke, and many more who are trying to prevent the downfall of free Russia.
The story starts off with Toad who is the admiral's right hand man. Toad is whispered a secret about how people aren't really dying by natural causes, but by poison. Toad of course tells the admiral. But before they can look into it, they are whisked away to Russia to oversee a delicate mission.
Jack Yocke, is a newspaper reporter looking to make a name for himself. He goes away on assignment to Russia. Along the way he meets the admiral who uses him to help tell the story to the American people.
Jake and Toad soon realize it's the CIA who are poisoning people. Along with getting to the bottom of the poisonings, they also tour a nuclear facility. They hear rumours the Middle East is looking to purchase nuclear bombs.
Jake soon comes to the conclusion that Russia is crumbling and is not equipped to deal with the task of destroying their nuclear bombs. They can't protect them, nor can they even track their whereabouts.
The duo soon uncover a web of binary poison and a major disaster that threatens to destroy President Boris Yeltsin's attempt to unite the country.
This book is action packed and has a lot of twists and turns. The characters are realistic, and story is well written.
I highly recommend this book, it's a page turner.
