All About Online Writing
Online writing is one of the easiest things to start.
There are many free websites and resources to get you going. When it comes to building a portfolio, you are going to want examples of your writing.
This page is dedicated to helping you get started, whether that means taking some courses, or creating your own blog. These are great free references that have helped me, and I know will help you as well.
Online Creative Writing Courses / Workshops
Perhaps you are new to writing online and want to take some courses. Or you just want a refresher. Whatever you decide, if it helps you get inspired to write, I highly encourage it.
Online creative writing courses helped me and they can help you too.
There are many online courses, so take your time, do your research and find out what works best for you. My only suggestion is to make sure the creative writing course is recognized by your local college and university board.
If you reside in the Toronto area, please go to my Toronto Creative Writing and Workshops page.
Free Creative Writing Websites
A website is a great way to start writing online. Of course this is where you would have to shell out some money towards your craft. I recommend doing this only if; you have an ebook you want to promote; you’re keeping your portfolio online; or, you want to start making money online. Otherwise I would stick to blogs, as they are a great way to get familiar with writing online.
Or if you want to try out a small sample of what it would be like to have your own website, building a lens with
Squidoo,
is a great way to test the water.
Squidoo is free and allows you to build a webpage which they call a lens, geared on one topic.
Squidoo is also a great way to bring traffic to your website. So if you have a website build a lens that relates to your website. If you build it - traffic will come.
One other note, google loves Squidoo, so it's a great help in getting your webpage indexed faster.
Some other great free websites to try are;
ehow,
and story mash.
Journals
It’s easy to use a creative writing journal online.
I recommend a great program called Journal 5, with Steve Pavlina templates. But if you're like me and want to try the product out before you buy it, check out the
free trial they're offering.
Make sure to write daily in your journal about your feelings, thoughts, ideas, dreams, memories, whatever. If you want to have rules, go ahead. If you want to have a theme, great. As long as you are writing who cares about the rest.
Blogging
Blogging is another way to venture into online writing. Get a free blog at
Blogger.
Pick something you are passionate about, something you could write a few pages a week on. You can turn this blog into a creative outlet, or anything. Imagine if your blog got enough visitors, you could even make money out of it.
A great way to build traffic is by guest blogging, click here to find out more.
Articles
Writing articles online is another easy way to build your portfolio. Writing articles is also a great way to build up your reputation and promote your work. Two databases I regularly use are;
ezinearticles,
and articlebase.

A great resource to check out, if you want to make money online writing is Get paid to write content online.
In Conclusion
Writing online can be fun and profitable. Keep in mind to do your homework before buying a product or service. Get busy. The more you write, the better you become, and the more you can grow.
